Best Festivals to Explore in New Orleans

Updated: Dec 25, 2023

One of New Orleans' most famous attractions is the annual Mardi Gras celebration. Thousands of people join together in the streets for this colorful event. None of the other festivals, like, should be missed. They're numerous. Whether your interests are in exotic cuisine, music, literature, art, or other fields, there is a festival in New Orleans that will suit them. Attending these events should be on your itinerary when you visit the city.

Essence

In the 1990s, Essence, a lifestyle magazine for African American women, announced plans to host an annual music festival honouring contemporary Black music and culture. Due to its reputation as the birthplace of African American musical genres including rap, jazz, and rhythm & blues, New Orleans was a natural option for the venue. Since then, three days of activities including both established and emerging stages have been held annually in July at the Super dome stadium in New Orleans.

Luna Fete

Luna Fete is one of the most unusual art events you will ever experience. The four-day art festival takes place in early December and transforms downtown buildings into digital canvases. You'll be exposed to some incredible lighting-produced digital art that showcases the works of local artists. There's an hourly light show with digital sculptures and video mapping projections. There will also be a substantial bazaar where you can buy items created by local artisans. Attending this visual feast is free of charge.

VooDoo

Annually, New Orleans hosts the Voodoo Festival, also known as the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience. It normally takes place around Halloween weekend and features a wide range of musical styles, including electronic, rock, hip-hop, alternative, and hip-hop acts. The event will take place at City Park, a large urban park in New Orleans' Mid-City section.
